Using Banner at Binghamton University: Banner and Self Service Security

Banner and Self Service Security

This area describes the Banner security schema, provides general information about security, and provides links to Banner access request forms for faculty and staff.

Banner Security Team

The Banner Security team consists of both technical and functional members from various student services offices and Banner functional lead areas. The team is headed by the University Registrar. Team members meet weekly to discuss requests, evovling security developments, FERPA chages and interpretations, policy changes and evolving rules surrounding personal information security. Security requests are also circulated to this team, who make access grant decisions.

IMPORTANT: Access to the Social Security Number

Access to student and employee Social Security Numbers is restricted. To obtain access to the SSN, you must provide a justification in writing to the Security Team leader (Terry Kelley-Wallace, University Registrar). Final approval will be made by Banner Steering Committee, constituted by the University vice-presidents. While we understand this process may delay your access, we have instituted this policy to protect student and employee identities, and reduce the circulation of personally identifiable data.

General Information

  • B-Number Transition
The B-Number is the new primary identification number that will be used in lieu of the Social Security Number in the Banner Student System starting in Fall 2008. Whenever possible, the University will strive to use this number when dealing with student academic records, as opposed to the Social Security Number.
  • ITS Acceptable Use Policies
All users are required to accept and adhere to acceptable use policies when first accessing the Banner system. Read the policy in its complete form.
  • Privacy Policies
Read the University privacy policy regarding covering data collection on the World Wide Web.
  • Guidelines for Storing Sensitive Data / Data Security
While Banner is designed to be a secured system, the external storage and use of Banner data must also be secured. Please read these guidelines to learn how to safely store, access and transmit data.
  • Information Security Policy and Procedure
Read specific policy regarding the safeguarding of data, and procedures in place for reviewing access and use.

Requesting Access to Banner

In order to safeguard student and employee data, our security policies require us to confirm your request with your supervisor, and seek approval from the Banner security team. All users with legitimate business purposes or needs will be granted access to data. The process has been automated and simplified in order to provide access to data in a timely manner.
